Helva is a pedigreed Turkish Van cat, the swimming-cat of Turkey. Van cats evolved around Lake Van in Turkey, where they swim along the shores
and hunt for minnows among the lotus flowers and lily pads in the water. "Helva" means "honey" in Turkish. She was born on Apr. 22, 2006 at Kinali Kedi cattery, in Texas, and was sent to me in Tucson, Arizona by air. Van cats have a special relationship with water, but now she lives in the dry desert with me. Fortunately, my Helva likes radio, too! She often comes into the shack to sit on my logbook when she hears my voice, and keeps me company while I work stations SSB. I may have to (try to) keep her off the operating bench once I learn code, so she won't tap out a few comments of her own! She loves to communicate: What a "ham" she is!
My other cat is a pure-breed Turkish Angora, "Chauncy", and his picture is on page 223, when he was about 9 months old, fresh from the rescue shelter.
