Tune in the Universe!
Amateur Radio and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
Are we alone in the Universe? Are the stars teeming with intelligent life, or does human civilization exist in
absolute solitude? Either alternative has profound implications for the future of humanity. Scientists throughout the world are working to answer this question--and Amateur Radio can play a vital role. Tune In The Universe! is a radio amateurís guide to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). It is an interactive book on
CD-ROM, which can be read on any computer with ordinary web-browser software (easy-to-use hypertext format, just pop in the disc and Tune in the Universe!). Its six sections are part history, part tutorial, and part memoir. It seeks to involve radio amateurs, amateur astronomers, and other hobbyists in a scientifically credible search for our cosmic companions.
SETI pioneer Prof. Philip Morrison says, Dr. SETI, aka H. Paul Shuch, N6TX, has made an enticing, personal, good-humored, wise, and browse-able book on one CD. Tune In The Universe! is as diverse as the topic itself, packed with helpful accounts of half-a-dozen relevant disciplines, rational model calculations, detailed savvy hardware specs, memoirs of false signals both naÔve and subtle, and much more.
Science fiction luminary and SETI proponent Sir Arthur C. Clarke adds, Perhaps, as some wit remarked, the best proof that there is Intelligent Life in Outer Space is the fact it hasn't come here. Well, it can't hide forever -- one day we will overhear it.
Dr. H. Paul Shuch, N6TX is the Executive Director of The SETI League. The organization is dedicated to the electromagnetic Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Dr. Shuch, a radio amateur himself, has long been involved in the microwave search for life in space. He will donate a portion of each sale to benefit the nonprofit SETI League, Inc.
Tune in the Universe is richly illustrated with color images and drawings, and includes recordings of 16 ĎDr. SETIí songs. This CD-ROM requires a web browser, running under Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, or Linux operating systems.
